Brisbane has no shortage of tutors. So why open another one?
CEM started in 2023, a year after Catherine arrived in Australia. Five students, one rule: write three sentences a day. No curriculum binder, no fancy platform. Just three sentences, every day, and a teacher who would actually read them, mark them up, and send them back.
As students improved, the homework did too. Some found that too much and moved on. The ones who stayed made it a non-negotiable part of their day. One student did his before work every morning, without fail. Another submitted hers from a postpartum recovery ward, newborn in the room. Another kept her streak alive across time zones. When your students show up like that, there's really only one response: meet them there.
Word travelled quietly. Brisbane first, then Sydney, then Korea. Children started lingering around their parents' lesson time, curious about what was holding their attention. Parents started asking: is there something for the kids?
Within a year, there was. Because here's the thing about children: they absorb everything around them, not just vocabulary lists and grammar rules, but the habits of the people they live with. A parent who studies every day doesn't need to lecture their child about discipline. The child just watches, hovers, and eventually pulls up a chair.
That's not a philosophy. That's what CEM families kept telling us, unprompted.
Today, CEM's students come from Korean, Chinese, and Colombian families, and from local Australian families who found their way to us through Hangul 101. Some are adults working on their English confidence. Some are primary school kids building their first real study habits. Many are both, a parent and child at the same kitchen table, each with their own homework in front of them.
And now, CEM meets you where you are, online or in person.
브리즈번에는 튜터가 넘쳐납니다. 그런데 왜 굳이 공부방을 열었냐고요?
CEM은 2023년, Catherine이 호주에 온 지 1년째 되던 해에 시작됐습니다. 수강생 다섯 명, 숙제 규칙 하나. 하루에 문장 세 개 쓰기. 그게 전부였습니다. 거창한 커리큘럼도, 특별한 플랫폼도 없었습니다. 매일 세 문장, 그리고 그걸 실제로 읽고 피드백을 돌려주는 선생님 한 명.
실력이 늘수록 숙제도 어려워졌습니다. 그 과정에서 떠나신 분들도 있었지만, 남은 분들은 숙제를 진짜 daily mission으로 만들어버리셨습니다. 출근 한 시간 전에 제일 먼저 숙제를 끝내시는 분, 출산 후 조리원에서도 쉬지 않고 제출하신 분, 여행 중에도 루틴을 지키신 분. 학생분들이 그렇게 하시는데, 선생님이 열심히 안 할 수가 없었습니다.
그렇게 브리즈번 안에서, 시드니 지인들 사이에서, 한국으로 CEM의 이야기가 조용히 퍼져나갔습니다. 자녀들이 부모님이 공부를 하는 것에 대해 그리고 그 수업 시간에 관심을 보이기 시작했고, 부모님들이 물어보셨습니다. 아이들 수업도 있냐고요.
1년이 채 되지 않아, 생겼습니다. 아이들은 주변의 모든 것을 흡수하죠. 단어와 문법만이 아니라, 함께 사는 사람들의 습관까지. 부모가 매일 앉아서 공부하면, 아이는 그걸 봅니다. 기웃거리다 참견하고, 그러다 어느새 옆에 앉아서 함께 책을 꺼내듭니다. 누가 시키지 않아도요.
이건 그냥 이론이 아닙니다. CEM 학부모님들이 직접 전해주신 이야기입니다.
지금 CEM에는 한국인, 중국인, 콜롬비아 출신 가족들, 그리고 한글 101을 통해 찾아오신 현지 호주 학부모님들이 함께합니다. 영어에 자신감을 키우는 성인도 있고, 처음으로 제대로 된 공부 습관을 만들어가는 초등학생도 있습니다. 부모와 자녀가 같은 공간에서 각자의 숙제를 펼쳐놓고 공부합니다.
그리고 이제는 온라인뿐 아니라 대면으로도 CEM이 한 발짝 더 가까워졌습니다.
